Queen's Park has found $2.1 million more to help the city of London pay for social programs and policing.
That's on top of $13.3 million the province has already provided the city for 2005 and is the final instalment under a program that's the main one for transfer of money to local governments, the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund.
Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Steve Peters announced the additional funds yesterday on behalf of Finance Minister Greg Sorbara.
Peters said the extra money was provided after the province reviewed and updated its allocations with information provided by the city.
London is one of 30 municipalities to be awarded extra funding and received the second-highest amount after the Region of Niagara.
Seven other municipalities in the London region also received extra money.
"These are things that are going to be reviewed annually to look at any changes that might be needed," Peters said. "This additional funding will provide support directly where it is needed -- for social programs or policing costs in London."
Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best called the announcement "very welcome news." She said it shows the province is willing to look at facts provided by the city and make needed adjustments based on London's needs for social programs and spending.
She said the additional funding demonstrates the co-operation between the city and the province these days and how, when the city makes its case, the province listens and is willing to act.
"We'll continue to make the case when we feel we need to," she said.
Peters said allocations for 2007 to 391 Ontario municipalities will be announced soon.
He noted such allocations from the provincial treasury are on top of funding for transit paid from the gas tax, infrastructure money for roads and bridges, and support for ambulances and public health.
Other "top-up" allocations were announced yesterday for centres in the region.
